Monitoring wild boar and other ungulates using camera trapping and the REM methodology
MINUARTIA is launching new monitoring programmes for wild boar and other ungulates in Catalonia using the Random Encounter Model (REM), a camera-trapping-based methodology, within the framework of the Catalan Wild Boar Monitoring Programme. This approach makes it possible to estimate wildlife population densities in a standardized way, including in areas where hunting is not practiced and where traditional population indicators are limited. The new surveys are being carried out in several natural areas and game reserves, building on MINUARTIA’s extensive experience in validating and applying this methodology across different management contexts. The results will contribute to a better understanding of wild boar, roe deer, red deer, fallow deer, and other ungulate populations, providing key information to support decision-making and the sustainable management of ecosystems.
Strengthening RDI with two new HORIZON projects on Biodiversity and Infrastructure
MINUARTIA is strengthening its research and innovation activities in the field of transport infrastructure and biodiversity through the award of two new European projects funded by the European Commission under the HORIZON programme. The SHIFTIN and OCTOPUS projects add to the European initiatives already being carried out by the organisation and reinforce its role in research on integrating biodiversity, climate resilience, and sustainability into transport infrastructure. MINUARTIA will lead activities related to the implementation of nature-based solutions, ecological modelling, and the development of decision-support tools, while also contributing to the training of a new generation of researchers focused on climate change challenges. These projects will help advance innovative solutions for transport infrastructures that are more resilient and better aligned with biodiversity conservation goals.
Future Trends in Wild Boar Research and Management at IWBS 2026
The 14th edition of the International Wild Boar and Other Suids Symposium (IWBS 2026), held in Croatia under the theme Rooting towards the future, brought together experts from around the world to discuss the latest trends in wild boar research and management. MINUARTIA participated by presenting studies on ecological modelling, population monitoring, impacts on protected natural areas, and African Swine Fever management. Among the highlights of the symposium were a keynote lecture reviewing 25 years of wild boar movement tracking and an international workshop on ASF control and eradication strategies, which emphasized the importance of coordination, cooperation, and the implementation of integrated management measures. These topics are closely aligned with MINUARTIA’s expertise in population censuses, GPS-based monitoring, ecological modelling, and the prevention and mitigation of wild boar damage.
Participation in the international workshop on AI and new technologies for scientific research
MINUARTIA participated in the international workshop AI and Edge Computing for Scientific Research, held in Barcelona with the participation of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), where researchers from Europe and the United States discussed the potential of artificial intelligence, smart sensors, and edge computing to transform scientific research and biodiversity monitoring. During the event, the team shared its experience in wildlife monitoring projects and the application of advanced technologies in the field, highlighting the challenges and opportunities associated with the use of automated data collection and processing systems. The workshop also provided an opportunity to explore new avenues for international collaboration and to promote the development of more efficient and automated tools capable of generating real-time information for environmental management and conservation.
New edition of the guide on technical specifications for wildlife crossings and measures to promote biodiversity
The third edition of the technical reference guide on wildlife crossings, perimeter fencing and other measures to promote biodiversity in transport infrastructure is now available. Produced within the framework of MITECO’s Working Group on Habitat Fragmentation, the publication includes new content on habitat defragmentation, ecological restoration and technologies to reduce wildlife roadkill, and updates the recommendations on wildlife crossings. MINUARTIA has contributed to this update by providing technical assistance, as part of a collaboration spanning more than twenty years aimed at improving ecological connectivity and the integration of biodiversity into transport infrastructure.
